Alert Laura Cantrell on WFMU

Laura Cantrell is doing a fill in for Irwin on FMU right now. She’s spinning some Bob Wills, “cherokee maiden”. Good stuff.

Clark 8 gets some play

The cool DJs Jon and Marc at killradio.org played Oh Boy on there demo show Hear Here. I’ll update that with a link soon, they played it in the first half hour. I also recorded a crazy acoustic tune that we’ll be putting together in Clark 8 soon. I’m debating whether to release it to the 8 people that actually visit this web site.

The gift

Ok. I think I’m going to have to say that where I work is awesome. For Friday, in exchange for helping out on some stuff over winter break, I and others each received a black iPod nano. I am very grateful for this, because I could never justify getting one of these things for myself given the price and my relative lack of cash.

And to think that most grad students I know don’t even like their advisors. I would like my advisor(s) even if they hadn’t given me this. (and I’m not just writing that for the inevitable day when they stumble across this here blog) I don’t usually post stuff about school (which I refer to alternately as work, or the place I like to be) here, but this crosses over from hardcore science to cool gesture.

Ok, so now people can go look up how many times I’ve used the term iPoedophile and other such terms and can call me a hypocrite.

Awesome I …. shot that

Saw the beastie boys ‘authorized bootleg’ last night. At first I was sort of underimpressed… perhaps I just don’t dig enough of their newest stuff… but then they just started breaking out insane video editing techniques. We’re talking like Video Toaster type stuff. It was pretty darn funny. Money Mark and MixMaster Mike were awesome too.

Also saw a preview for “Wassup Rockers” and I was like…. hey it’s those kids that always skate at USC. Now I’m thinking I’m probably confusing one set of long haired skateboarding kids with their celluloid facsimiles, but maybe not. I’ll ask them next time I see them.

Truth on Conan from We Are Scientists

From the we are scientists news page:

Dave Letterman to us privately after we played our song on his show and the sound had cut out: “Thanks for coming on the show! Great job.” Carson Daly: “Hey, good job. That was great.” Conan O’Brien: “Wow, interesting time signature on that! … I played a thunderbird once, actually — they’re really weirdly weighted … So this is a ‘52 reissue, right? Not an original.”

This reminds me of the time I saw Conan (or was it times) I saw him. At the preshow banter he was like “Everybody take off their clothes and let’s party” I naturally start taking off my shirt. To which he replies “Hey you in the back stop! That guy was actually getting his shirt off.” Good times. Did anyone ever see when he hosted the TNT showing of Clambake the 1967 Elvis pic? He wore a Hawaiian shirt and played acoustic guitar the during the bumpers. “Clambake gonna have a clambake” That was like Elvis officially jumping the shark, water skis and all.

Also I happened to catch Metric on Conan, man did they kill.

Well, yeah, so… who’s down for a cover version of “I am a scientist” by GBV…

Simple, crazy simple

Ever see something so cute you just want to dig into it with a Freddy Krueger glove* and nosh on its entrails… Well me neither, but this stuff sure is cute and edible. Like, I felt loved when my mom would hook me up with some fruit roll ups or something, but this lady is treating her husband and herself to a first season of full house barrel of cuteness (when all was innocence and ABC could have a show about 3 men living together in SF and have twins playing one person) every lunchtime.

“How rude.”

And sure, you could say to me that you never ever watched a second of TGIF on ABC in the 90s and I’d say something about Mr. Winslow and you’ll laugh.

*In school we had a tour of the evidence lab at the police station. Someone had a pretty wicked freddy glove confiscated. Along with tons of nunchuks and things with nails pushed through them sitting in the evidence display case. It was like a jeweler of illegal weapons… Us kids loved it. Probably related to D.A.R.E.

normal nightmare

So, I wake up this morning in a panic. (I dreamed) I had finally gotten my demo some airplay and it was getting mocked mercilessly, because people were A/B playing it with a Morrissey track (off his new album) and it was the exact same song, exact same chord progression. And I was like “III IVmaj7 I , come on, it’s not like it’s original, it’s just uhh come on!!! I hadn’t even heard the Morrissey song before.” But no, the damage was done. I had basically released music that was an exact copy of a new Morrissey song, maybe that one about far off places or something and claimed it as my own.

Then for about a minute I stared at the alarm clock Big Boi was interviewing Morgan Freeman. The obey guy was on indie 103.1… and my songs don’t as far as I know steal from anybody else. But it took me a second, I was pretty worried.

Then I got on my bike and rode through the pouring rain to work, sadly my bike with fenders is still in my car in pieces.

Three new songs

Hi there. New Clark 8 songs are up. I also put them on MySpace here which I guess sort of saves me bandwidth costs. Plus if you add Clark 8 as a friend real quick now, I’ll write a song for you. You have to be one of the 3 first and Ry already got one, but he may forfeit his song choice to someone more deserving…

Here are direct links to the songs:

Demonstration Remonstation

  1. Oh Boy new
  2. Secrecy is the best policy new
  3. Fog of AUMF remixed

For the audio geeks out there. I finally realized that compression on the entire mix and reverb on the entire mix (ie the master channel) is key to making the recording sound right on speakers. That and I got the Peavey pc-1600 working with protools so it’s almost like we have a mixing board. Albeit a cheesy midi one. :)

LA Treasure Hunt

Well, we did it. The unclean pirates came in 5th or 6th out of 25+ teams. Shows what total nerds can do. For some pics look here: photos on flickr
Here is a photo of our team (the gray t-shirts) with the other pirate team. Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrr. Pirate Mutiny!
pirates and pirates and pirate 2

Yeah, 25 miles is not that bad, even on zero sleep. Propers to the organizers for putting together the most fun I’ve had all year in one day. I may give a full play by play once the team and I reconvene.
