Growin’ up Atari.
January 24th, 2006
A reminder of . When I was growing up, I always seemed to lag behind other kids in terms of video game systems. Either that or I would zig (nec turbografx-16) when others zagged (sega genesis)… but I won’t forget getting a new Atari 2600 (the smaller one w/o the woodgrain model JR) the same Christmas everyone else was getting an NES.
This was cool though, because I got such great games as E.T. E.T. for Atari is an unheralded and often unfairly criticized work of genius. You, as E.T., go running around and falling into pits collecting telephone pieces that you have to put together into a phone. Once you phone home, you meet the mothership, which had pretty sweet graphics… and then… the game just restarts, no like “Victory” screen or “Thanks for Playing” or whatever. Probably no worse than level 255 or whatever on Pac-man when things just go haywire… but I remember being awfully disappointed.
Someday I will tell the tale of beating Bonk’s Revenge.
Please, do tell. Did you ever play that volleyball game for the turbografx? I remember thinking that was pretty cool. Also, I don’t remember so well from 6-9th grade, but did you have altered beast?

I am the person who owned the game you speak of. No one else in the county had that game as far as I know. In fact, I never met another person who owned a TG16. I’m sure they’re out there, though. I actually didn’t have altered beast. I only got a genesis as a hand me down from someone… (maybe you???) I dunno, anyway, yeah… I only had like… uh some sonic game and Virtua Racing, which I maintain was the greatest (/hardest..) genesis game ever.
