Well, I appreciate the pragmatic approach google is taking in mainland China. They wrote about it here in their official blog. I wrote my feelings on the subject at the reputable (hah) online forum /. here.
Even censored search is better than none. It’s all we have here in the US anyway thanks to the digital millenium copyright act (PDF) of 1998. Xenu anyone?

I finally got the ingredients together to throw down a banana bread. The results are shown here. It’s good, the crushed up Skor is key, but I think I should’ve either toasted the cashews or used some crunchier nut.
I finally did this, perhaps somewhat inspired by this student movie that one of my roommates showed me. He had made this three piece mini movie that was almost like, well, food porn. Within the bounds of art and school and whatnot, but it was definitely awesome. And with ‘foodporn’ of the sort shown here, no one should get offended. I hope at least.
PS here’s to hoping for Jill Carroll’s release.

There is a new zine (literally a zine, no website) called bike pLAgue. It’s pretty cool, creative commons licensed and created on Linux using Scribus. There’s only 1 issue out so far, so go snag it if you live in LA. Even wannabe’s like myself can learn something.

A reminder of . When I was growing up, I always seemed to lag behind other kids in terms of video game systems. Either that or I would zig (nec turbografx-16) when others zagged (sega genesis)… but I won’t forget getting a new Atari 2600 (the smaller one w/o the woodgrain model JR) the same Christmas everyone else was getting an NES.
This was cool though, because I got such great games as E.T. E.T. for Atari is an unheralded and often unfairly criticized work of genius. You, as E.T., go running around and falling into pits collecting telephone pieces that you have to put together into a phone. Once you phone home, you meet the mothership, which had pretty sweet graphics… and then… the game just restarts, no like “Victory” screen or “Thanks for Playing” or whatever. Probably no worse than level 255 or whatever on Pac-man when things just go haywire… but I remember being awfully disappointed.
Someday I will tell the tale of beating Bonk’s Revenge.

Study: Most College Students Lack Skills Napoleon Dynamite needs to have a word with America’s college students.
America’s politicians must view this as great news. “Do my bidding!”
As a side note, for the ladies, besides bow hunting, which I can work on (we had archery in gym), I have all of the skills mentioned in the movie.

Boing Boing: Joe Rogan rants on the beauty of DMT
I don’t usually recommend MP3s of TV stars talking about doing drugs with lots of swearing, but this is key, esp. via the internet tabloid boing boing. Boing boing doesn’t seem to get it, but Joe Rogan clearly shows why he was such a key element in News Radio. And why fear factor is so silly.
He knows more about DMT than the average bear. In classic boing boing style (or just internet first post style) the mp3 is not listened to prior to posting and the context of his comments on LA is completely ignored. I guess most people just aren’t on the right wavelength or sumpin’. This mp3 is intense, not really for people under 17 though.
Finally if you snoop around the directory the mp3 is in you’ll find a way too detailed timeline of the movie Primer. Which I liked on one level, but general thought was mediocre entertainment.
Oh and finally Joe Rogan lives in LA, which seems obvious.
(edit)
Ok ok, so I emailed the poster of the story Xeni Jardin and she wrote back saying she didn’t intentionally make him sound like he hated LA. I still think it kinda comes across that way without the lead in. I think at this point I have spent a bit too much time on the subject.

Ok, but seriously, Mr. Rogan was on KROQ’s loveline as guest co-host and someone called in about DMT. Crazy. He basically gave a similar rant, but more subdued thanks to the FCC. Thanks to Dan for calling me up and telling me to listen in.

That quote comes from the FBI via this speech from Vice-President Gore given today alongside republican former Representative Bob Barr. An important insight into why the president should not be treated as above the law in the mid to late sixties or now. (via del.icio.us/popular, but worth its own entry here)
Other parallels drawn here (Hartford Courant) and here is the relevant Act explicitly, unapologetically (and currently being) sidestepped by President Bush.

Finally got a chance to see unpopable at Mr. T’s Bowl. Really amazing. If you have never seen or heard a balloon bass played by it’s inventor Addi Somekh you are missing out on a great experience. They have a very good vibe going with just (balloon) bass and guitar.
Also, I was given a flyer for a ‘lingerie night’ by a female bartender there. It had a website link on it, I went to said website, and thought to myself: “Why now, really, would she think I would be a lingerie shopper? Should I be?”
I’m thinking no, but … well, no.
Also, there is a Honduran place at Adams and Raymond that is good. I biked there in some insane wind… ran over a fallen palm frond on the way back. That’s is as LA (minus the bike riding) as seeing a license plate that says URSO LA. Which, incidentally, I did see today.

Over the course of maybe 7 hours last night I:
So that was fun. Have a listen, critique my lo to no fi experiments. About the name of the upcoming release Asteya… googling it will give you the idea that I am a yoga freak, which I am not, but it is a nice concept.

My man Ethan called me astute in his blog. So I have to give him props for following his dreams. Dreams he had while drunk, hence he works at a winery (Ravenswood). No, he wasn’t really drunk when he thought about getting into the wine business. But while we are shouting out blog friends, what about Trudy’s ephemeroi. It’s more like a blog (unsleeping), an event list (windchill) and then other stuff. She and her crew know more about what’s hep and happenin’ (or at least has free drinks) in new york than anyone. If I found a site this elite covering LA I would be pretty psyched, especially if I had free time and money.
But I don’t. Heck, I don’t even have a working car right now.
My vacation in my hometown of Jamestown, NY was a riot. The band The Audience of Jamestown ripped it up with 3 shows. They need to get their CD finished so all y’all can hear them in all of their glory. I recorded one of those shows on my 4 track, I’ll try to get some mp3s up soon. Saw a million people, missed a few good friends, but made up for it with folks I hadn’t seen in over 5 years. I feel really lucky to be able to go home and see so many people I grew up with, regardless of whether they live there now or not.
Happy new year / January 3rd.
