Deerhoof, finally

Last Wednesday I saw Deerhoof at the Echo in an early all ages show. Seeing the youth of today made me feel old and decrepit. I took pictures, they were blurry and sort of a waste, but they still remind me of the show.

Their new album is at a higher level than their prior work (which is pretty copious), I think they sort of curved the corners and punched up (compressed?) the sound. But, they didn’t compress at the cost of dynamics, there is some crazy quiet stuff. Did I mention that I have 2 basic sound systems in my possession these days? One, the Camry (thanks E and Raf), which is boomin’ (above the noise of the car itself), and the Laptop… Laptop speakers. Not really ‘musical’ even if you disdain audiophile snobbery jargon.

I have to get to putting my component system together from scratch… Question is should a soldering iron be involved? Uh… Right, so Deerhoof. New album, ‘The Runners Four’ really flows. I should be listening to it right now on giant speakers. But, alas, it’s out in the camry. Deerhoof live on WFMU provide a good look at what came into play at the live shows.

Shout out to J who saw them at the Smell back in the day, that must’ve been a good show.

Here is a picture from the show I saw last Wednesday. All of my shots are blurry long exposure episodes.

Art Brut at the Echo

Flickr Photo
It’s been a while since I’ve seen an English band with so much stage presence.  Art Brut; really took over the venue for a bit.  One of their openers Darker My Love sounded a bit like a more melodic Dead Meadow.  The other funny thing about Art Brut is their (ironic?) obsession with Los Angeles.  It must stem from Los Angeles being in some ways the inverse of London.  At least, the two are very very different places, but it almost seems like parts of LA would love to be London.

I digress.  Big news otherwise is there is a power outage at USC which is coming at such short notice that it screws up a lot of plans for a lot of people, including myself and my lab group.

More photos from me and others of Art Brut here.

Vim trick for when NFS is down

You may find yourself logged into a server, editing a way in vim only to find that you can’t write to the filesystem due to an NFS error. There is a quick and easy way around this by doing this:

:w !ssh user@someothermachine "cat > backup.txt"

It will prompt you for your password and then ask you to hit enter after the ssh command completes. Tada, a file named backup.txt will be sitting on ’someothermachine’ and your work will be safe.

Correlation between CA proposition spam and the idiocy of the proposition

So, has anyone else who allows themselves to be spammed by the CA board of elections found that this special election, all of the spam re: the propositions seems to be coming from the wrong side. That is, I agree with props 79+, but I get spam supporting those below and bashing 79 on up.

I figure I will be spammed by people I support at some point, but right now all of my special election spam has been from groups I disagree with.
